Secrets of the Pros, Inc. was started by Ken Walden, and the first product is a 2 DVD set titled The Basics of Modern Recording and Mixing.
Ken saw a need in the music industry for a fast and easy way to show musicians, songwriters, and anyone getting into recording the basics of how most professionals work. He found most of the other materials (books, etc.) were far too technical and never showed you industry standard methods for setting up your studio, recording, and mixing, (and there are some very standard ways of working in the "real" world). This DVD shows you the way most professionals work, and then some.
Ken's Info
Ken has spent his life working in the audio industry and was lucky to work with some of the best producers, engineers, and artists in the music industry. Bands like Santana, Metallica, John Lee Hooker, Booker T. Jones, Jade, and Sammy Hagar, to name a few. He has also worked on a variety of different types of music: Rap, R&B, Funk, Rock, etc. The most recent credit was a "special thanks" on Santana's "Shaman" record. This was for helping out with numerous technical issues during the making of this album.
“I played in several bands early in my music/audio career and when it came time to get a demo together I did my best to learn about recording, but our early tracks sounded pretty bad. Most musicians I know have struggled with this problem. After taking an audio engineering class in college a professor told me I was talented and suggested I pursue audio engineering, so I sent out resumes to several studios in the San Francisco Bay Area. One thing led to another and before I knew it I was working with some of the biggest names in the Music Industry. After years of engineering at The Plant Studios in Sausalito I went to work for Digidesign. This was back in the early years of digital recording. It was exciting to see digital recording and Pro Tools go from being an esoteric editing program to a world-class recording, editing, and mixing program. The best thing about this revolution is that now anyone can get their hands on professional tools that can make great sounding records.” -- Ken Walden
More About the DVD
To create the DVD, Ken took all the techniques and tricks he learned from working with the best engineers, producers, and artists in the business, and combined them with everything he absorbed during his 9 years of experience as a Tech and Product Specialist for Digidesign. The information has been distilled into 3 hours of material specifically designed to give you the most important knowledge you need to make professional sounding recordings.
"The Big Secret”
The section called "the Big Secret" is, by far, the most important section on the DVD. Custome feedback indicates that this part alone is worth more than the selling price. This section features one of the best Acoustician/Room Designers in the world discussing how to put together a world-class monitoring system in an inexpensive room.
They cover how a speaker and a room can interact to completely change the characteristics of the sound that is coming out of your mixer. This is a problem Ken has seen in almost every studio he visited, regardless of cost. For instance, did you know the room you work in, most likely, has more of an effect on what you hear below 300hz than the speakers you bought? It can have a dramatic effect on what you hear in mid and high frequencies as well. Room problems can increase or decrease certain frequencies in the bass by 10-15db easily! Unless you address these problems your mixes will not sound the same when you take them out of your studio. This section will show you how to get world-class results out of almost any room.
