Emagic Logic Platinum 5.1.3 online, available free download for users

With version 5.1.3 Emagic offers several optimizations for the award-winning Logic Platinum 5.
Users of version 5.0 and 5.0.1 who have not yet downloaded a subrelease should do so immediately so as not to miss out on the continually expanding feature set of Logic Platinum 5 this update offers free access to such sought-after features such as, for example, Multiple Undo with history.

The 5.1.3 update is now available as a free download for all owners of Logic Platinum 5

Version 5.1.3
Version 5.1.3 gives the following improvement: When a plug-in is inserted during playback and the automation is used a lot simultaneously, the audio configuration of that song might get damaged under certain cirumstances. To avoid this, we strongly recommend to use version 5.1.3.

Version 5.1.2
VST 2.0 effect plug-ins are now capable of responding to incoming MIDI messages.
- It is now possible to take advantage of the MIDI input of VST 2.0 effect plug-ins which are capable of receiving MIDI; for example, Steinberg's VoiceMachine and ProSoniq Magenta. To use this type of plug-in with MIDI it must be inserted in the instrument slot of an audio instrument channel. In this configuration the plug-in responds to MIDI message send to the MIDI channel of its respective audio instrument channel. Audio can be routed to the plug-in via its side chain input.

Note: Vital information about plug-ins used in Logic is cached. For this reason a MIDI-capable VST2.0 effect plug-in might not show up in the Audio Instrument pop-up window in some cases. (VST2.0 software instruments are not are not effected by this.) Fix: Insert the VST2.0 effect plug-in as a track insert into an audio track and restart Logic - or just re-launch Logic's audio engine if possible. From now on the MIDI-capable VST2.0 effect plug-in will be available as Audio Instruments as well.

New phase parameters for the Stereo Delay
- There are four additional parameters for the Stereo Delay in the blue parameter field accessed via the "001011" button. The phase of all four feedback parameters (i.e. the phase of the left and right feedback and the phase of the left and right crossfeed) can be inverted by setting the flip-menu next to the parameter to 'inv'.

New Audio Configuration command
- The command Remove Plug-Ins has been added in the Audio Configuration window. Menu: Audio > Audio Configuration > Edit > Remove Instruments. Using the audio configuration window this command allows the removal of all instrument plug-ins at one time.

Many minor improvements

Logic Control
Logic Control now supports OMS (Mac).
- This means MIDI interfaces that require OMS to operate can now be used with Logic Control system.

Note: In this case OMS must be the only active MIDI driver e.i;Options > Settings > MIDI Interface Communication > "Use OMS if available" is activated as the only driver option. In a mixed setting, that means OMS is used in addition to the built-in MIDI drivers, Logic Control must be connected to the MIDI ports which are accessed by the built-in MIDI drivers.

- New option: "Touching fader selects track".
When enabled in OPTIONS > Control Surfaces > Preferences touching a Logic Control fader will select the respective track assigned to the fader. Note: This does not work with Master Faders and not while recording.

Support for X/Y surround editing
- Two new parameters X and Y are available in Pan/Surround Multi Channel and Channel Strip views (V-Pots 5 and 6 in Channel Strip view). X/Y serves the same purpose as Angle/Diversity while offering an alternative representation in a X/Y system. When automated only the respective Angle/Diversity parameters are recorded and displayed in Logic.

- In the Pan/Surround menu (hold PAN/SURROUND button down), soft button "Ang/Dv" has moved from V-Select 8 to V-Select 7. V-Select 8 now activates the new "X/Y" Multi Channel view (Mode display: "HY" - the X character is not available on a 7 segment display). In this view, V-Pots control X, and faders control Y.

Note that X and Y act in a rectangular coordinate system. Values which would lead to positions outside the surround circle are not possible. Coordinates are automatically adjusted while editing to ensure valid surround positions.

New EQ and Send Mute functions
- In EQ Multi Channel View with Flip mode enabled, the MUTE button will toggle the Bypass of the respective EQ band.
- In Send Multi Channel View with Flip mode enabled, the MUTE button will toggle the respective Send On or Off.

New Marker function
- Pressing NUDGE while holding down MARKER, creates a marker at the repective song position. This allows to create markers with one hand without entering "Big Permanent Marker Mode".

New Zoom function
- Pressing a Cursor Key while holding down a Zoom button scrolls the active window by a page. When releasing the Zoom button the previous Zoom status is restored.

- The Zoom button LED now flashes while in Permanent Cursor button mode.

New Jog Wheel functions
- Turning the the Jog wheel while holding CYCLE enables Cycle mode. The left locator is set to the current SPL. Turning the Jog Wheel advances the SPL and sets the right locator respectively.

Tip: Rotating the jog wheel counterclockwise while holding down CYCLE defines a skip-cycle range.

Turning the the Jog wheel while holding DROP enables the Drop mode. The Drop-in locator is set to the current SPL. Turning the Jog Wheel advances the SPL and sets the Drop-out locator respectively.

Pressing SHIFT + SCRUB enables the Shuttle mode using the Jog Wheel. (Logic Control's shuttle mode functions like the shuttle mode on a video deck.)

Improved Global View
- The Fader bank offset is now memorized separately for Global views displaying one track type only. This feature allows to toggle between Global views without loosing the fader bank offset. Example: Scroll to the audio tracks 2-9 in Global Audio Track view after displaying the audio instruments 5-12 in Global Instruments view - when toggling between the Global views the fader bank offset will be memorized.

Note: The old "Global View Fader Bank Offset" is now used for Global views displaying a combination of several track types.

Many minor improvements

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Version 5.1.0
- Logic Platinum version 5.1 provides support for Emagic's Logic Control and Logic Control XT. Options relevant to Logic Control can be found in the menu: Options > Control Surfaces. Further documentation can be found in the respective user manuals.

- Multiple undo/redo

- Smoothed volume fade in/out behaviour on long audio fades.

- Many detailed improvements

- EVP88: Three new electric piano models were added in Logic version 5.0 - Suitcase V2, Bright Suitcase, Wurlitzer240V - raising the number to 15 piano models. Some extra detailed improvements.

Logic Control
Following are some last minute changes regarding Logic Control which are not included in the Logic Control manual:

Updating the Logic Control Firmware
Updated Logic Control firmware is included as part of the Logic Platinum 5.1 installation. Depending on the Logic Control firmware version detected - when running Logic Platinum 5.1 (and future versions) for the first time after installation, a dialog window may ask you to update the Logic Control firmware. Once confirmed the Flash-ROM of each Logic Control unit connected will be automatically updated with the most up-to-date firmware. A progress bar displays the status of the update.

Note: Under some circumstance the progress bar may not appear to indicate the update process. In this case it is necessary to start Logic Platinum 5.1 a second time to successfully update the firmware.

Note: Please wait until the update has finished completely before you start sending any additional MIDI information. Once finished you can continue working as usual. Should the update fail, a dialog will allow you to repeat the process.

Logic Control in 'Track Channel Strip View'
You can bypass an Audio Instrument, Send or inserted plug-in by holding down OPTION and pressing the respective V-Pot.

Mac users only
Currently, the 'Port' parameter of MIDI instruments should not be set to '0' (transmission to all ports of the MIDI interface). This will avoid sending MIDI messages to Logic Control which are not meant for it.

OMS user
For Logic Control to function, OMS users need to manually map the OMS input and output ports used by Logic Control to the respective MIDI ports in Logic Platinum: Options > Settings > OMS Preferences > Input/Output Mapping. For details, please see the Logic Reference Manual.

Multiple Undo and Redo
The new multiple undo/redo functionality allows the user to undo or redo almost any editing step in Logic. While working, a log of all editing activities is automatically created. This "history" of all editing steps is shown as a list in a dedicated window - Edit > Undo History ... The list is saved with the song and is available when opening the song the next time. All working steps can be retraced at any time in this way.

Currently there is one exception: Destructive audio edits can only be undone once, immediately after execution.

You have the option to determine the number of undo steps via Options > Settings > Global Preferences > Limit Multiple Undo Steps. The default is set to 30 steps.

The Undo History window

The Undo and Redo History Window is opened via the Edit menu: Edit > Undo History ... The window lists by number all editing actions from top to bottom in the order they were performed in Logic (i.e. the oldest step is on the top the most current step on the bottom). Steps that are available for undo are indicated by a light blue backround. The actual step available for undo is shown with a dark blue background. After performing an undo/redo action a red line indicates your current position in the history. All available redo steps are indicated by a light green backround. The actual step available for redo step is shown with a dark green background.

There are three ways to perform an undo or redo: Sequentially by either using the respective keyboard shortcut (Command Z / Shift Command Z) or by clicking on the Undo/Redo button in the History window. Clicking on an list entry anywhere will undo/redo all steps between the current status line (red line) and the clicked step. All steps are animated during this process. You can stop the undo/redo process with a long click anywhere in the history window.

Note: Once you perform an edit in Logic, available redo steps will be replaced by the new editing action(s) starting at the current status line (red line).

Use Edit > Delete Undo History to clear the complete history. Note: Deleting the Undo History cannot be undone, or redone. All undo/redo steps up to that point will be lost.

The undo history is saved with the song and will be available when the song is opened again.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Logic Platinum 5.0.1
- Logic version 5.0.1 and higher supports the new Emagic ES2 software synthesizer, and the EVOC20 vocoder plug-in package.

The ES2 and EVOC20 are specifically optimized for the processor types listed below.

- DOT (DSP Optimization Technology):
Logic Platinum 5.0.1 features DOT, and is optimized for the following processor types:
Windows: Pentium III, Pentium IV, AthlonXP
Macintosh G4: PowerPC Velocity Engine

The reduction in CPU resource usage for Logic Platinum 5's plug-in processing is highly dependent on the plug-ins being used. In general, a doubling of the available CPU power can be observed when using DOT. This allows a significant increase in the number of plug-in instances which can be opened simultaneously. Dependent on the plug-ins used, this gain can be as high as 400%.

All areas of the audio mixer benefit from the DSP optimizations of version 5.0.1. A number of the Logic Platinum 5 plug-ins are specifically optimized for the processor types listed above. Such plug-ins are indicated by the "DOT" logo on the plug-in surface. Please note: The "DOT" logo is only visible with activated DSP optimization (see below).

To ensure maximum compatibility, the DSP optimization (DOT) can be switched to "generic" (DOT deactivated), via the Audio > Audio Preferences > Processor Type flip menu. DOT is active when the flip menu indicates the processor type used in your computer. This is the default setting (DOT active) which will not need to be changed, in normal circumstances. This setting should only be altered (DOT deactivated) if you experience any compatibility issues.

If no processor optimization exists for a particular processor type, Logic Platinum 5 will set the processor type preference to "generic". No other options will be available in the preference flip menu for these types of CPUs.

- Automatic chord interpretation in the transport window:
The MIDI activity window of the transport window now shows chord symbols when Logic 5 receives more than one MIDI note simultaneously. The respective held intervals are interpreted and displayed as chords. Single MIDI note messages and MIDI Controller messages are displayed as usual (as described in the Logic Reference Manual).

- Display of plug in name and setting:
The title bar of each plug-in window displays the name of the currently open plug-in (effects, audio instruments) and its loaded plug-in setting. The display format is as follows:
Song name : Plug-in name : Plug-In setting

- Matrix Editor: Functions > Include non-note MIDI Events
At least two MIDI-notes need to be selected for this to work. If enabled all MIDI-events (other than notes) between the selected MIDI notes are selected as well. Non-note MIDI events are for example: pitch bend or continuous controller messages. Edit functions like cut, copy and past will be performed accordingly. This function allows for example to cut/copy and paste a selection of notes with their pitch bend data (Include non-note MIDI Events - checked) or without (Include non-note MIDI Events - not checked).

- 'Undo' has been implemented for the functions "Lock SMPTE Position" and "Unlock SMPTE Position". Menu: Functions > Object > "Lock SMPTE Position" / "Unlock SMPTE Position"

- Plug-Ins with Side Chain capabilities:
The following integrated Logic 5.0 plug-ins feature a new side chain input: the Compressor, Expander, Noise Gate and Auto Filter. A side chain capable plug-in can be inserted into any audio channel, and can receive an additional audio signal of another audio track, via the side chain. This additional audio signal can be used to trigger the particular plug-in function.

The side chain input source is selected via a flip menu in the gray plug-in header of a side chain capable plug-in. Any available audio track can be used as a source. Once the side chain input source is selected, the plug-in processes the audio of the channel it is inserted in, using the trigger impulses provided by the side chain; i.e. the audio signal of another track. The Treshold parameter determines, which side chain input signal level triggers the plug-in function.

Examples:
A sustained pad sound is sent through a noise gate, which is triggered by a drum track being used as the side chain input signal. This results in a rhythmic pad sound which follows the signal peaks of the drum track.

A noise gate inserted into a bass guitar channel is triggered by the kick drum track, via the side chain. This can "tighten" the timing of the bass guitar, as it follows the kick drum signal.

Blending a music mix with a voice-over. To achieve this, a stereo mix of the music is sometimes routed through a compressor which, in turn, is side chained, using the voice-over track. In this type of setup, the music becomes softer when the narrator is speaking, and louder, when not. The effect is also known as "Ducking". (Please note that in order for this to function, the automatic gain make-up or "Auto Gain" must be disabled.)

- Numerous detail improvements

- For technical reasons, the TDM versions of the ES1, Tape Delay and AutoFilter plug-ins can't be used in Logic 5. Emagic is working on a solution.

Known bugs in Logic Platinum 5 (Windows/Mac):

For technical reasons, the RocketNetwork technology is currently not supported by Logic Platinum 5. RocketNetwork support will be available in an upcoming Logic 5 sub-release.

In some cases, it may not be possible to convert (or not completely convert) large Logic 4.x Environment Macros into the Logic 5 song format. Unfortunately there is no workaround at this time: The songfile format of Logic 5 has changed.

In rare cases, Logic Platinum 5 may quit immediately after starting the program and initializing the XSKey for the first time. Simply reopen Logic 5. This problem will not occur again.

OMF:
Currently 24Bit OMF files are not imported into Logic Platinum 5 correctly. We are working with Avid on a solution.
24Bit OMF files, exported from Logic Platinum 5, are correctly imported by ProTools (Digidesign) but not by Nuendo (Steinberg). As a workaround: Export the files from Logic Platinum 5 in the Open TL format, and import these into Nuendo.

The following information pertains to users who purchased the Logic 5-Update (for version 4.x) or the Logic 5 Update-Kits (for version 3.x and earlier).

In order to use your plug-in settings in Logic 5, you will need to manually copy these particular settings to their respective sub-folders inside the Logic 5 Plug-In Settings folder: Logic Platinum 5 > Plug-In Settings > ...
