Roland VS2480HD Version 2 24-Track Digital Studio Workstation with CDRW
Roland once again raises the standard for Digital Audio Workstations with the much-improved VS-2480HD version 2.0 -- a complete solution for all semi-pro, pro or broadcast recording needs. This dreambox offers 24 tracks of 24-bit digital audio, 384 virtual tracks, almost 13,000 minutes of HI-FI 24-bit audio, selectable sampling rates up to 96kHz, 56-bit internal processing, an integrated 64-channel digital mixer with 17 motorized faders, 34 busses, and up to eight onboard stereo effects processors. It does 16 tracks of simultaneous recording to its swappable 30GB internal drive from 16 analog inputs (TRS plus 8 phantom XLRs), 16 digital I/O's (R-Bus to other Roland pieces or ADAT/TDIF, AES and Analog breakout units) and 16 effect returns. The VS-2480 features a mouse port (mouse included) and an ASCII keyboard input for software-style editing & control. A VGA monitor port, completely bridges the gap between hardware and software-based recording. Here's where the big changes are in Version 2 - full mouse based waveform editing on screen, including true drag-and-drop and drop-down menus. There is also a cool graphical patchbay with virtual cables you grab and move. Grab EQ curves and move them with the mouse. Tweak your 10 automated mixes from the screen. As for I/O-if this piece had any more ins and outs it would be Swiss cheese. Besides the above noted inputs, the 2480 has 8 analog TRS outs, 2 stereo S/PDIF (coax and Optical), 2 separate phone mix outs and 16 R-BUS outs than can become just about anything when hooked up to different Roland boxes. Its 16 rotary V-knobs place a full input strip (with excellent compression/gate dynamics & 5-band parametric EQ) for each of 64 inputs at your fingertips. You can even grab a piece of audio and place it on one of 24 phrase pads with internal phrase sequencing - great for vocal BVs or loops. Speaking of loops, you can now "rip" audio off audio CDs or lift .WAV files, through SCSI with the optional VS-CDRII or CD-RACK. Indeed, the new 2480 completely supports .WAV file formats. As for effects, the 2480 comes with a 24-bit VS8F-2 installed, and room for three more. All the VS favorites are here, including incredible guitar amp, mic and speaker models. Record a guitar dry then audition it through a roomful of amps. Record a vocal with a SM-57, Roland DR-20 or AKG-3000, then apply world-class mic models - even adjust mic placement! Use Roland DS powered reference monitors and the speaker modeling lets you listen to your mixes through popular studio monitors. Don't forget CD mastering, with a full set of mastering tools, 4x instant CD burning and easy CD archiving. Motorized faders, automixing, locating, 1000 levels of undo, scene recall, days of track time, mouse, ASCII and computer monitor hookups, days worth of phrase sampling time, world class effects, ease of use, Roland's VS reliability, SMPTE in, Word Clock in and SCSI installed (the VS-2480 will record to SCSI if you fill up the 30 gig drive). This is THE workstation to own for the pro or the aspiring pro. Rock-solid hardware with the flexibility of software-that's the new VS-2480. The VS-2480 24-track Digital Studio Workstation is the pinnacle of Roland’s V-Studio technology. As the first self-contained hard disk recorder to offer full 24-track/24-bit digital recording with onboard effects processing and optional CD recording, this impressive workstation is already light-years ahead of the competition. And with its built-in 64-channel digital mixer, 17 motorized faders and VGA monitor output—plus mouse and ASCII keyboard inputs for quicker operation—the V-Studio is making history all over again. Features: Self-contained 24-track/24-bit/96kHz digital recording workstation with built-in CD-RW drive 30GB hard drive* for unprecedented recording time 24-track playback; 16-track simultaneous recording with 384 v-tracks "Drag-and-drop" control using included mouse; also accepts ASCII keyboard (optional) 64-channel, fully automated digital mixer with 17 motorized faders Professional-quality connections including 8 XLR/16 balanced trs mic/line inputs Dynamics processing and 5-band EQ on every channel 2 stereo effects processors (expandable to 8 stereo, 16 mono) including cosm Mic, Speaker and Guitar Amp modeling, plus Mastering Tool Kit 24-voice Phrase Pads for triggering and arranging samples New CD Capture function for importing audio and .wav files Dual 8-channel r-bus ports for expandable I/O in a variety of analog and digital formats; smpte and word clock input VGA Monitor Output with stellar graphics including mouse-based waveform editing and control *In 10GB partitions. The 24-Track Workstation is Here… Roland revolutionized the digital studio workstation concept with the original 8-track VS-880. Now some 200,000 V-Studios later, Roland once again raises the bar with the VS-2480: the first self-contained digital recording workstation to offer 24-track recording and playback. And with its ability to record 16 tracks simultaneously, the VS-2480 can capture a full live performance including individually miked vocals and drums, plus guitar, bass and keyboards. 384 Virtual Tracks provide a virtually unlimited workspace for storing alternate takes and ideas. Once the recording is finished, simply select any 24 tracks for mixdown and playback. 24-bit/96kHz Sound Quality It’s no secret that increased headroom and dynamic range translates into better recordings. So naturally, the VS-2480 offers a 24-bit MT Pro recording mode and a choice of sampling rates including 44.1 and 96k. But truth be told, there are other factors that determine how good a digital recorder can sound, such as the quality of the analog-to digital converters used. Fortunately, the VS-2480 boasts natural sound. And once in the digital domain, this sound is processed using full 56-bit resolution. So regardless of how much dynamics processing, EQ and internal effects are being run, your music will always sound its best. *At sampling rates of 96kHz, only 12-track playback is possible. “Drag-and-Drop” Editing and Keyboard Control With Mouse and ASCII Keyboard inputs, the VS-2480 bridges the gap between hardware- and software-based recording. Just plug in the included mouse, add an optional keyboard, and you’re in the fast lane of professional production. Using the mouse, you can move audio by clicking on a phrase and dragging it to the desired location. Or highlight and copy phrases with familiar “point-and click” commands. Even tasks such as naming songs and phrases are easier—just type them in without having to scroll through individual letters! This familiar mouse-based editing was previously only available using software, but the VS-2480 brings it to the rock solid V-Studio recording platform. Graphic LCD Display with VGA Output A large LCD display makes working with the VS-2480 simple and intuitive. Whether monitoring input levels, adjusting EQ, or zooming in on a waveform for the perfect edit point, the icon-based LCD with mouse control shows exactly what you need in a clear, logical format. And for the big picture, simply connect an external monitor to the VS-2480’s VGA output. Functioning as an “Information Display,” the external monitor can parallel several of the most commonly used LCD screens—including Playlist, Channel View, Mixer, Effects, and EZ Routing—using a sleek, graphic interface that makes working with the VS-2480 even easier. 64 Channels of Digital Mixing When you invest in a VS-2480, you’re not just getting a 24-track digital recorder, but a powerful 64-channel digital mixer derived from Roland’s groundbreaking 7000-Series V-Mixing System: 17 motorized faders with Scene recall, 16 rotary encoder knobs for direct control over pan or other channel parameters, plus onboard channel dynamics and EQ. In addition, the VS-2480’s multi-purpose faders can be instantly switched for controlling Inputs 1-16, Inputs 17-24 plus Aux, Tracks 1-16, or Tracks 17-24 plus FX Return. An assignable “V-Fader” mode transforms the VS-2480 into a powerful fader pack for controlling MIDI information or specific channel parameters. Studio-Quality Effects Included The pre-installed VS8F-2 Effects Expansion Board provides two independent stereo effects processors including COSM Guitar Amp, Microphone, and Speaker Modeling—plus lush reverb, sparkling chorus, delay effects and much more. These effects can be “printed” during recording or added as needed at mixdown. And when you’re ready to create the final 2-track master, just add some split-frequency compression and fully parametric EQs courtesy of the Mastering Tool Kit. Best of all, the VS-2480 accepts up to three additional VS8F-2 cards, yielding a total of eight stereo effects processors and virtually eliminating the need for noisy external effects. *Note that there are some restrictions on effects with 96/88.2kHz sample rate. All the Inputs and Outputs You Need The VS-2480’s robust input/output section was built to handle the most demanding recording applications, whether recording drums, vocals, guitars or an entire live band. To start, there’s 16 balanced inputs consisting of eight combination XLR/TRS inputs and eight dedicated TRS inputs; a guitar/bass Hi-Z input is also provided. Analog outputs include Master and Monitor outputs, four Auxes, and dual Headphone jacks. Digital connections include coaxial and optical I/O, plus dual R-BUS ports. Using optional interface boxes, R-BUS provides up to 16 channels of additional 24-bit analog or digital I/O in a variety of formats. Put it all together, and you’ve got up to 36 inputs and 32 outputs at your disposal. SCSI Port and Optional CD Burning The VS-2480 includes a SCSI port for easy connection to external hard drives or the Roland CD Recording System. And now, creating your own CD is faster than ever using the new “CDR” Recording Mode. This new mode records directly in Audio CD Image format, eliminating the wait while an image file is built. Just record your 2-track master and start burning at blazing new speeds. When it’s time to back up your project, you can take your pick from inexpensive CD-R and CD-RW media, or use an external SCSI storage device such as another hard drive or removable media device. SMPTE Sync and Word Clock Input Synchronization options include both MIDI Time Code (MTC) and SMPTE. This makes it possible to synchronize the VS-2480 to a variety of studio gear, from software sequencers to video. A Word Clock Input is provided for clocking the VS-2480’s digital inputs to an external master clock for simple and reliable connections to other digital equipment. From recording rock bands to producing film scores, the VS-2480 can be the centerpiece of your music production environment.
