A reverb or room simulator effect processor or plugin is the effect that will help you create atmosphere in the mix. It's great when you have a great recording studio so you don't have to use any reverb at all. But when you record it like that you will not be able to change it anymore. That's why most of the times the instruments, and especially voice and vocals, are recorded close to the microphone without much "room sound". In the mix you can then simply add the type of room that fits the song, the mix, the band, the singer etc.
