Violin Music Theory Basics: Note, Pitch, Sound and Tone
Notes are the basic way of explaining how music works, and a way of reading music and talking about music. A sound is actually not really the same as a sound or a tone. Let's quickly look at different examples of sounds, tone, pitch and notes.
The violin can make lots of sounds. If you hit it against the wall (no don't do it!) it will makes lots of sound or noise. But is this really a tone, or a note? In music sounds are played by many instruments a drum makes a kind of sound, but it isn't really a note. A piano on the other hand can play many notes. So what is the real difference between all these things?
