WNDU-DT is On-Air with their Harrison 9624 TVD digital broadcast console
Harrison today announced that South Bend, Indiana broadcaster and NBC Affiliate WNDU-DT is On-Air with their Harrison 9624 TVD digital broadcast console. Their broadcasting operations are located on the campus of The University of Notre Dame. The award-winning station has been on-air with a high-definition digital signal since April, 1999 on channel 42.
WNDU took delivery of their TVD in December of 2001. Since then they have been running the TVD in a temporary location until their newly remodeled control room was finished. Remodeling was completed in May of 2002.
Key audio operator, Tony Plaia is often behind the TVD for up to 7 hours a day. Tony comments, "One of the things I appreciate, is the ability to create my own custom console layouts. I can consolidate all the controls I need to a few simple faders. My setups are easily saved and recalled - now I glide through newscasts. The TVD is a dream to work on."
He continues, "Making the transition from analog to digital was a big step for us, made easy with the TVD. It's given me the freedom to concentrate on other things. For me it's made production fun again."
Mick Wright, WNDU Production Manager, adds some observations. "I was given excellent support from the start. My questions were answered quickly and completely. I could tell, the Harrison sales and service team was committed to providing the best possible support."
The TVD at WNDU is the largest TVD model, 9624. The fully digital console is outfitted with 96 input channels and 24 Mic prešs each with 3 Inputs allowing for 72 possible mic choices and a number of studios. WNDUšs system is completed by a 224 x 224 digital router fed by Harrisonšs Remote Box I/O system outfitted with AES In and Out and Analog and Out cards.
Unveiled at the NAB Convention in April of 2001, TVD was Harrisonšs first contribution to digital broadcast technology. The TVD features an extremely compact, ergonomically-designed main control surface which can be controlled from up to three additional locations using Harrisonšs Satellite Touchscreen technology. This advanced feature gives master control operators and video directors control of the entire audio platform when usual operators are not available.
The result of extensive market research, the TVD is designed as a "task specific" on-air broadcast console. It owes its simplistic operation, in part, to the removal of confusing timecode automation controls that clutter other designs. For additional ease-of-use, system operators can enable/disable the consolešs processing elements - like EQ, dynamics and filters. Motorized, touch-sensitive faders and snap-shot recall of every console parameter also simplify daily, routine operations as well as the most demanding special events.
The standard control surface is 183 cm (72 inches) wide. A high-resolution LCD touchscreen accompanies the control surface. Besides displaying graphical data on EQ, dynamics and panning, the touchscreen is the principal GUI interface to the consolešs integrated system router (2240 x 2240 capable) and also provides redundant control of every surface function.
WNDUšs NewsCenter 16 has been honored with the prestigious Edward R. Murrow "Overall Excellence" award as well as the Associated Pressš "Best Newscast" awards for five consecutive years.
