System 6000 used on Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones
TC Electronic's flagship processor the System 6000 was used by Skywalker Sound, a division of Lucas Digital Ltd. LLC, on the latest Star Wars episode for dialogue in multiple scenes during the movie. The Cat 43 emulation was utilized during the dialogue pre-dubbing stage. Dialogue mixer Michael Semanick preferred presets "Backyard (there is more than one)," "Courtyard" and "Dark Tunnel" according to Paul Pavelka, Chief Engineer at Skywalker Sound. Upon reviewing the mixing log, Paul reports that at the time of the release Michael was working with version 2.0 software which has subsequently been upgraded to version 2.5. Typically the System 6000 was locked to timecode so presets changed with corresponding cues. Reverbs in the System 6000 can be changed in realtime. Cues locked via timecode altered parameters and algorithms, and were useful in recreating acoustic spaces with foreign dialogue.
{81081024473775_2.jpgr Michael Semanick elaborated on the project further. "I used the Quantec preset and TC's wider variation of it. Detune 01 was used for pitching up and down. Cat 43 was used for removing noise from dialogue, which you have to be very careful with." George Lucas prefers using sounds recorded in the real world, and likes to "worldize" dialogue. Worldizing involves taking a pre-recorded track and playing it back through speakers in an actual environment while re-recording it using microphones with the addition of the environment. Michael enthuses "the System 6000 was really beneficial in 'worldizing' dialogue without having to take the tracks to the actual environment. It provides a realistic cathedral, forest, street scene, etc." Michael recalls using "Big E Slap" for various tasks as well. Dialogue stems were recorded using Pro Tools at either 48 kHz or 44.1 kHz in 24 bits. Much of Michael's work was originally stereo and adapted to 5.1 in the System 6000, or simply was recorded 5.1 start to finish.
Michael's handiwork can be heard in "Attack of the Clones" and "Lord of the Rings." Michael mixed dialogue on David Fincher's movie "Fight Club" at Skywalker Sound in the same room as "Attack of the Clones."
Paul Pavelka has been involved in the film sound industry since 1978 when he started as a console design engineer for Quad/ Eight Electronics. He has been involved with dozens of films as a sound engineer for Todd-AO in Hollywood and New York, and Universal Studios. Paul is currently Chief Engineer at Skywalker Sound in Marin County, CA. He has worked on such films as "Independence Day," "The Color Purple" "Toy Story 2," "Fight Club" and "A.I. Artificial Intelligence-AI."
