Yamaha introduces new 500 series flutes

Yamaha professional flutes have become the standard for advancing and professional players. These models have been refined even further in 2000 to feature a newly designed scale. This "type-4" body style (4 is the last number of each model number) is specially designed to hold a focused tone at any volume and in all ranges of the instrument.

By combining a solid-silver EC cut headjoint with a silver-plated body and keys, Yamaha has produced a professional-quality flute that is durable and beautiful. Additionally, the 500 series flutes offer French style key arms, normally found on the more expensive models. The two models available are the YFL-584H (inline G) and YFL-574H (offset G), which adds a Split E mechanism for a smooth, in-tune high E.

The most notable improvement to these models is the Type 4 body, previously available only on custom 800 Series flutes. Designed with the orchestral player in mind, the Type 4 body was created to maintain a focused tone in every range, at any dynamic level.

"The new 500 Series fills a previous gap in the Yamaha model sequence. The blend and ensemble tone quality will immediately be obvious to both teachers and directors," says Mary Karen Clardy, Yamaha flute artist. "Playing on this instrument will develop embouchure, and as a result, intonation, dynamic range and ensemble blend improves. The new 500 Series flute plays like a flute in a much higher price range."

The new D#/C# key design allows for easier motion between the lower keys. The 500 Series offers an engraving and post design for a more refined appearance and an updated case.

"Dealers continually try to offer their customers the best possible value in upper line instruments," says Kurt Witt, Wind Instrument product manager, Band & Orchestral Division. "I'm confident these new 500 Series flutes will be a welcome addition to an already popular flute line."
