Yamaha Wood Flutes Combine Traditional Feel and Modern Quality
The modern manufacturing know-how that makes today's musical instruments of such fine quality is literally centuries removed from the traditional craftsmanship that gave ancient instruments their character. Leave it to Yamaha to bring together the best of the old and the new, at Winter NAMM 2001.
Yamaha Corporation of America, Band & Orchestral Division, introduces the YFL-894W and YFL-874W Custom Wood Flutes, a pair of thoroughly modern flutes designed to offer the contemporary sound that today's players demand, but with the traditional look and feel of wood. Yamaha's exclusive Grenadilla seasoning process brings the same quality to the flute body that artists have come to expect from Yamaha clarinets and oboes.
"I am very excited about the new Yamaha wood flute! It has extraordinary dynamic range and tone—it adds a whole new palette to the color possibilities of the instrument," says Jeff Khaner, Yamaha Flute artist and principal flute with the Philadelphia Orchestra. "I look forward to using it in all types of repertoire, both in the orchestra and on the solo stage."
Available with an inline G or offset G mechanism and with a C or B footjoint, the YFL-894W and YFL-874W both feature a solid silver key mechanism. The instruments also include Yamaha's exclusive Type 4 body style; metal tenon rings; a split E mechanism; a wood EC styled headjoint (which will fit on a standard silver flute in addition to the wood model); and a French-style case. The new flutes are currently available.
"These new wood flutes are beautiful instruments with an incredibly rich tone," states Kurt Witt, Wind Instrument product manager, Band & Orchestral Division. "To bring together the traditional material of Grenadilla with a contemporary sound, we have created the best of both worlds for the professional flutist, the college-level student and the serious amateur alike who are looking for a new and unique sound from the flute."
