Most scholarly books that mention the trombone include it as an adjunct or afterthought. I wanted a book which would feature musicians, music, and ideas primarily because they are related to the trombone. In other words, instead of the trombone simply being associated with significant people and ideas, in this book the people and ideas are significant because they are associated with the trombone. My primary sources included Music Index, DIALOG, RILM, Dissertation Abstracts, Journal of the International Trombone Association, Newsletter of the International Trombone Association, OCLC, International Index of Music Periodicals, many items from my personal library and those of my colleagues, along with other bibliographies of brass literature. Major sources of verification include Mark Fasman's Brass Bibliography, Duckles and Reed's Music Reference and Research Materials, the Historical Brass Society Journal, Instrumentalist, and the Brass Quarterly. Thomas G. Everett, founder of the International Trombone Association, has written in the Foreword of this book, "It is important for the contemporary trombonist to be aware of performance practices of early music, chamber and orchestral music, and jazz. In addition, historical musicology, methodology, iconography, acoustics, literature, and instrumental design need to be considered. Lane's cross-references in his book lead his readers into these diverse areas. They should prove intriguing not only to trombonists but to curious and knowledgeable musicians and historians of the arts." The material may be perused at three levels, (1) using the broad classifications divided by chapter; (2) using cross-referenced material in the entries for sub-classifications, such as alto trombone; (3) utilizing the index for author, subject, and keyword [a/s/k] references, which include the [a/s/k] line at the bottom of each entry. Though not intended as a bibliography of trombone performance literature, the index will direct the searcher to books and articles where there are annotations and discussions of music significant to trombonists. Examples of typical search strategies are given. These include a recently discovered work by an American composer, written for a famous American trombonist of the 1930s, and the probable identify of the trombonist who immortalized the "rink" or "doink" sound on recordings of the Spike Jones band. To quote Everett again, "Finally, though the book was intended as a research reference text, I have also found it fascinating and enjoyable simply to peruse and discover more about my chosen musical instrument."
