Yamaha CFIIIS Concert Digital Grand Piano for Art Center
Since last August, the Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center has added an impressive luster to the downtown cultural district of Alexandria-Pineville, Louisiana. And a Yamaha CFIIIS concert grand piano graces the stage of the new 614-seat, $9.1 million state-of-the-art venue.

Arts Council Board Member Gregory O’Quin approached Johnny Martin, whose family has long supported the arts, to see if they might donate a grand piano for the new theater, and Martin enthusiastically agreed to provide the funding.
The Martins gathered donations from family members all over the country. “They’re in the lumber business, but there are several artists in the family,” says Bernhard, “including a daughter who recently obtained a Master’s degree in opera performance.”
Executive Director Randall Bernard and Martin met with Raymond Goodrich II, president of Red River Music, Inc., in Alexandria to select the piano.
“A really good piano was one of our top priorities,” says Bernhard. “We had done a great deal of research, and decided we wanted service by a local representative. This Yamaha piano is a tremendous asset for us; it’s the finest concert grand in central Louisiana.”
Once the Yamaha piano arrived onsite, the performing arts center kicked off the 2004-2005 season with “Celebrating Our Own,” a gala Grand Opening celebration by local artists. Last October the Rapides Symphony Orchestra, the Louisiana College Chorale, The Talk to the Music Community Chorus and special musical guests offered the world premiere performance of William C. Banfield’s original composition “Hope: Symphony 9,” built around an Arna Bontemps’ poem. Alexandria native Arna Bontemps was a major figure of the Harlem Renaissance, and Banfield’s 35-minute symphony (commissioned by Continental Harmony, a program of American Composers Forum) was a centerpiece of a week-long celebration of the African American experience.
Other season highlights include four-time GRAMMY winner Dr. John, harmonica virtuoso Charlie Musselwhite, blues headliner Shemekia Copeland, the illustrious Vienna Boys Choir, gospel stars D’Vine, several popular musicals and theatrical productions, and competitions for Louisiana’s Junior Miss Pageant. Highlights in the 2005-2006 season include Steve Conn (Nashville singer/pianist), “Sing Sing Sing” (a musical based on Benny Goodman's 1938 Carnegie Hall performance), a Broadway production of Mame, and the first Louisiana International Piano Competition, founded by the acclaimed Russian pianist Nikita Fitenko.
The Coughlin-Saunders PAC is a hub of activity. “We’ve been embraced by the entire community,” says Bernhard, citing usage by business leaders, a film society, fashion show and wedding planners and, of course, arts groups mounting theatrical productions, music and dance performances.
