Yamaha PM1D Digital Mixer Captures Concord Jazz Festival
Although the 2005 Concord Jazz Festival took its bows on March 11, fans can go online and experience one of the highlights of the show in mid-June, courtesy of Apple iTunes and the Concord label: a live recording of the John Lennon classic “Imagine,” performed by the festival’s four distinct song stylists, Karrin Allyson, Oleta Adams, Diane Schuur and Sara Gazarek.

(Photo Credit: STILETTO Entertainment) The song was recorded by engineer Ted Kujawski at the tour’s final stop, the Cerritos (Calif.) Center for the Performing Arts, and mixed at Audio Magic in Buffalo, N.Y.
According to Jack Hayback, chief audio/video engineer for the Cerritos Center, Kujawski recorded the track using a combination of the house Yamaha PM1D digital mixing console and a DigiDesign ProTools HD system, linked via a DIO8 digital I/O interface. The Cerritos Center supplied the PM1D and DIO8, while Absolute Rentals of Burbank, Calif. supplied the ProTools components.
The Cerritos Center has been the site of a number of high-profile shows, due to a series of renovations and a unique structure that features movable walls and seating areas. The venue is also equipped for fully isolated recording in the form of an onstage microphone splitter with 57 onstage transformer-isolated lines split to monitor, recording/broadcast truck and booth feeds.
Since Kujawski served double duty as front of house and recording engineer, he opted to record from the direct outs of the PM1D channels via the input splits, sending a digital signal directly to the Pro Tools rig.
“That not only simplified things,” said Hayback, “but also made for a very clean recording. Our renovations and equipment upgrades have enabled the center to be able to accommodate any number of production expectations, not only for live performances, but also live recordings. With the right console and recording medium, you can multitrack, record and archive effortlessly.”
He adds, “The Concord label has been at the forefront of web-based music distribution, due to media convergence and the challenges of getting jazz played on traditional radio. We’re proud to have helped play a part in their efforts.”
